The new general manager of Eden and South Lakeland Credit Union is Stephen Thorpe - and he says he is delighted to be making the move to this social enterprise in a district he knows well.
"I was delighted to be offered the post of general manager of Eden and South Lakeland Credit Union. Run predominantly by volunteers on behalf of its members, ESLCU is a not-for-profit social enterprise which aims to promote responsible money management, both saving and borrowing."

A training day for volunteers from its offices in Penrith, Alston and Kendal was held on Tuesday 19th September. Volunteers got together at St Andrew's Church Centre in Penrith for a day of brainstorming and presentations from trainers. The trainers came from the Barclays Credit Union Programme – The credit union is one of just ten credit unions in the country to be given a place in the programme.
The brainstorming sessions came up with ideas for communications inside and outside the credit union, for training and for volunteer operations, and there were close examinations of the roles of everyone who makes the organisation a success, directors, volunteers and members. The lively discussions and talks during the day were an eye-opener to even the most experienced of volunteers.
Members of Eden & South Lakeland Credit Union took part today in the first of what will a number of training sessions, provided by The Barclays Credit Union Programme.
Today's workshop, entitled "Promoting the Credit Union through Social Media", was led by trainer Phil Frampton.
The Credit Union was delighted to welcome James Proudman, Bank of England Executive Director for UK Deposit Takers Supervision to our Penrith Office this lunchtime.
Mr Proudman, who is responsible for the supervision of the UK's banks, building societies and credit unions was on a fact finding mission to find out more about local community based credit unions.
Eden & South Lakeland Credit Union has been given a major boost with the announcement by the Barclays banking giant that our credit union has been selected for a training scheme to make our service to the public better than ever.
The credit union is one of only ten credit unions in the country to be selected this year, for the Barclays Credit Union programme, which provides training to improve key skills for staff and volunteers and to better meet the financial needs of local savers and borrowers. "We were delighted to be chosen to take part," said the credit union’s chair, Adrian Rush.
The Supervisory Committee is looking for two new members, following the retirement of Stephanie Fearn and the expansion into South Lakeland.
The primary role of the committee is to represent members’ interests by performing the role of independent internal audit, acting as the “eyes and ears” of the members. It is represented at board meetings and agrees an annual internal audit plan with the board. Committee members perform a “hands on” role, carrying out audit checks and reporting their findings for action by the board as necessary, and so have access to all internal documents and personnel.
The Credit Union was delighted to be invited to take part in the Impact Housing Association My Tenancy Matters Course on Tuesday 4th July. A short presentation was followed by a question and answer session.
All Impact Housing Association tenants who become members of the Credit Union receive an additional £5 donated by the Housing Association when they make their first deposit.

The credit union's 3rd AGM took place on Wednesday 8th February 2017. Members received reports from the board, treasurer and supervisory committee with details of the accounts and audit.
Around 250 applications for loans had been sanctioned in the first three years and over £300,000 lent - savers big and small have deposited in excess of £600,000. Members questioned the board and elected members for the board, supervisory committee and the credit committee.

At at Special General Meeting of Eden Save Credit Union, held on the 14th December, members approved two resolutions which enable the Board of Directors to apply to the Financial Conduct Authority for approval for the merger of Eden Save Credit Union and South Lakeland Credit Union by way of a transfer of engagements from South Lakeland Credit Union to Eden Save Credit Union.
Subject to Financial Conduct Authority approval it is anticipated that the merger will be completed during the first quarter of 2017.

Chair, Adrian Rush, reported that many borrowers would have been drawn to high interest lenders such as Payday loan companies and doorstep lenders but for the services offered by EdenSave.

On the 1st October 2015 EdenSave Credit Union marked the 2nd Anniversary of its launch.
"Nearly 500 residents across the district have now signed up for membership. Many more have approached the Credit Union for a loan."
EdenSave Penrith new opening hours
The EdenSave office at 34 Devonshire Arcade, Penrith is to open 5 days a week from 3rd August 2015.
We will then be open for business from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm each weekday.
EdenSave Junior Saver event at Penrith Library
EdenSave held an event in Penrith Library designed to encourage Junior Savers to join us.
The children who came along had a great time, and we were able to publicise the Credit Union both to the children and to their parents.

43 members of EdenSave Credit Union attended the inaugural Annual General Meeting at Penrith Methodist Hall on Monday night.
The meeting approved a Board recommendation to pay a dividend to members of 0.4% based on their average balances during the first year.

Saturday opening in Penrith
EdenSave opened its doors for business on a Saturday for the first time last weekend. Members of the EdenSave team operated from the office in Devonshire Arcade Penrith.
Following on from the success of this initiative the Credit Union will be open again next Saturday December 13th 2014 between 10:30am and 12:00 noon.

EdenSave Credit Union were delighted to welcome the newly appointed Minister for Civil Society, Brooks Newmark to their Penrith Office on Thursday 14th August.
Mr Newmark talked to the volunteer staff about their work for the Credit Union, including range of loans on offer including the Back to School summer promotional loan and the use of I.T.

EdenSave Celebrates Two Milestones
EdenSave Credit Union celebrates two milestones this month. Launched in 2013 it has now being successfully recruiting members across Eden District for six months. The six month milestone coincided with the 50th Anniversary of the launch of the first Credit Union in Britain.
